Karma - How I believe it works.
For many years I studied and read how karma works. There were many explanations out there, such as every action being mapped by the stars, or every action was being recorded in some way. However, none of these really made a lot of sense to me and it didn't really explain why you reaped what you sowed. Then I read a book called The Magus of Strovolos by Kyriacos C. Markides that finally explained it in a way that made perfect sense to me.
Our thoughts create.
I think it's pretty much accepted now that our thoughts are real forces. They just don't go out into the ether and vanish, they tend to pool. By that I mean, the more you think the same thought, the more of it that gathers and the stronger it gets. Think strongly enough on something and it will manifest itself physically.These are often called Thought Form or Elementals. (As opposed to the four nature elementals.) Elementals are very different from an entity. An entity is a spirit that can act independently whereas an elemental can only do what the thought that created it is based on. For instance, thoughts and actions of theft create a pool of energy that mirrors those thoughts. Same with love, hate, hurting, cheating, etc.
Elementals have the ability to create whatever they are based on for its primary purpose is to feed itself, and it only feed itself on the same vibrations, actions, thoughts, that created it.
The nature of any elemental, once created is that will go out from the source, looking for opportunities to feed itself. It look seek out those of a like mind and create a situation where its needs are fulfilled. All elementals return to those who created it. For example, supposing one commits a theft. The created elemental will go out and seek to create other situations of theft, and once it returns, the creator will either find they will suddenly have to steal 'one more time' or else they will be stolen from. Or maybe both. As long as the conditions that will feed the elemental are fulfilled.
This goes for anything else. Love, giving, hate, fears, revenge, whatever. It all turns into elemental energy and returns to the source. The amount of power that is returned is said to be seven times its original strength.
This is one reason why your belief system creates your reality. Those beliefs generates thoughts, and those thoughts create. The universe responds to the exact thing you put out.
How to overcome karma
Now even though an elemental will return to the source, it does not automatically mean that you must fall into the situation it creates. The way to overcome it is to change the thoughts that created it. A thief would not only have to resist the temptation to steal, but have to actually make a firm commitment that that isn't who he is any more. Once that occurs, the elemental will attempt to create a situation, but it will find that the source no longer resonates on the level that created it.
You will find, however, that it might take a time or two for the effect of karma to dissipate, This is due to how strong the elemental has become, and how much energy it has to use up in order to create some situations. Once it has used up its resources, it becomes inert. This is the reason why people say, I've changed my ways, but still things keep happening to me.
As an interesting note, it's also worth considering that looking at past lives might accidentally activate an inactive elemental that no longer had power over you in this life.
We send out lots of thoughts, and each one takes on its own power... but most are just too weak to do anything that will affect you.
What I've written here has certainly been my experience. Be careful what you create. I hope this gives you food for thought.
